The University of Piraeus in collaboration with CITE submitted their work entitled "Road safety: Assessing the effect of passive driving behavior" to the 11th International Congress on Transportation Research (ICTR2023) which took place in Heraklion, Crete between 20 and 22 September 2023 (https://www.ictr.gr/). The submission was accepted for presentation through the preparation of a poster.

Abstract

This paper considers the individual characteristics describing the "active“ driving behavior along with other factors affecting the probability of a road crash with the goal to estimate the impact of each factor on such a probability. Although the active driving behavior (i.e., factors shaping the way of driving) has recently attracted much interest from insurance companies, the passive driving behavior (i_e., the choice of routes) has consistently been overlooked since it does not constitute a part of the underwriting process. The empirical estimations show that more aggressive driving behavior increases the probability of a road accident, or equivalently, a passive d1iving behavior 1inked with the selection of safer routes, decreases the probability of a road crash by 9-14 percent. The latter shapes a clear policy to insurance companies and policy makers to provide drivers with significant incentives to adopt a less aggressive driving style, as well as choose safer routes.
